Welcome Message
from the Conference Chairs
Welcome!
The Society of Simulation and Gaming of Singapore (SSAGSg) is pleased to welcome you to the this year’s conference of the International Simulation And Gaming Association, ISAGA2009. As a young society established only in 2006, we feel honoured to have been provided with this opportunity to be the first South East Asian host to run ISAGA, which is also in its 40th year. The event has laid a milestone for Singapore, found on the Internet as ‘.sg’, in her role in the advancement of Simulation and Gaming, abbreviated also as ‘SG’.
The theme for this year’s multi-disciplinary conference is ‘Learn To Game, Game To Learn’ with contributions from both theorists and practitioners. Topics of interest span from technology and algorithms, to design, facilitation and assessment of simulation and games. The conference will also showcase various types of interactive learning environments supporting simulations and games, both with and without information and communication technology. Over the months, we received a total of exactly 202 submissions on the 3 main focuses: Technology, Content and Methodology in 16 tracks. The final program consists of 142 presentations, in 26 paper sessions and 16 interactive sessions.
We are pleased to see that ISAGA 2009 has bridged connections between participants from all over the world. Our 7 keynote speakers come from 6 different countries over 3 continents. As of June 18, nearly 150 participants from 29 different countries have registered for the conference. For the first time and outside Japan, we see an overwhelmingly stronger in an ISAGA conference from Asia countries or regions including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam, China, India, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.
As part of Singapore’s efforts to integrate advanced information and communication technology in the curricula and classrooms, our local teachers are showcasing their own games used in their teaching. Appraisals and constructive feedback from an international audience should further inspire us for more and better applications of simulation and gaming in education.
ISAGA 2009 was made possible by a lot of people. We thank the supporting universities, S&G Journal, and donors. We also thank the French Embassy, the British High Commission, Australian Education International, and our Singapore Immigration Authority for their generous sponsorships and spontaneous assistance for our overseas guests. We thank our Guest-of-Honour Mr Michael Yap for gracing the occasion, our International Advisory Committee members, keynote speakers, track chairs, reviewers, authors, affiliated societies of ISAGA, and many others who have contributed in one way or another towards the conference. Most importantly, we appreciate the presence of all participants. Despite the continuing economic downturn and the looming H1N1 pandemic, you are here making it more worth while.
We wish everybody a productive week ahead and our overseas friends, an enjoyable stay in Singapore!
On behalf of the ISAGA2009 Organizing Committee, and sincerely,
YEO Gee Kin
and CAI Yiyu
